IRWIN AND JOAN JACOBS CENTER FOR COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES Analysis of Write Amplification with Time Locality and/or Multi-Write Access

چکیده
Write amplification is a central performance figure of solidstate storage devices. As a result, significant effort has been devoted in the storage systems community to analyzing write amplification in useful scenarios. Analysis here means that a parametrized model is chosen for the device and its incident workload, such that the expected average write amplification can be obtained mathematically. While reaching this goal necessitates a detailed mathematical argumentation, such analysis offers the great benefit of predicting performance without need to deploy or simulate the device. In this paper we develop an analysis framework to calculate the write amplification for two novel and practically important scenarios: workloads with time locality, and devices with multi-write capabilities. The former captures a central feature of real-world workloads, while the latter addresses a promising feature likely to be added to next-generation solid-state storage devices.

Memristors can be used as logic gates. No design methodology exists, however, for memristor-based combinatorial logic. In this paper, the design and behavior of a memristivebased logic gate – an IMPLY gate are presented and design issues such as the tradeoff between speed (fast write times) and correct logic behavior are described, as part of an overall design methodology. A memristor model is ...

IRWIN AND JOAN JACOBS CENTER FOR COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES Structure Theorems for Real- Time Variable Rate Coding With and Without Side Information
The output of a discrete Markov source is to be encoded instantaneously by a variable–rate encoder and decoded by a finite–state decoder. Our performance measure is a linear combination of the distortion and the instantaneous rate. Structure theorems, pertaining to the encoder and next–state functions are derived for every given finite–state decoder, which can have access to side information.
